Podcast Script
Badass Drum and Bass
Title Music: Borgore Ice cream
Yo yo yo welcome back to the maddest media Studies Podcast. Yyyyyyyy-you are listening to episode. Today is Friday 11th 2010. Your host on the show is Dddddddj Tommy H, a student from Thomas Adams and he’s trying to become a drum and bass dj. So far other artists to inspire him are High contrast, Drumsound & Bassline Smith, Chase and Status and Breakage. He’s 17 years old; he’s from Antigua a small island from the Caribbean. He’s come to the UK for education and came across ways to make music and is now trying to become a great Dj and he has made a couple of his own tracks but he hasn’t got any big labels, he has few songs with big drum and bass and dubstep artists and is hopefully going to be a success.
Today on the show we are discussing the basics in making drum and bass and dubstep, we will also be talking about the young dj’s success. We will also have some track from the inspiring artists and some of the songs they have featured in with him. This show is to also allow the viewers to tell the difference between Dubstep and Drum and Bass.
Welcome to the Show. Today we are going to start off with the basics in making drum and bass and dubstep. We’ll start off with how to make Dubstep. Originally dubstep started off really calm and them came to a Drop. A Drop is when the beat/ bass starts and the drop add effect to the song which kind of differentiates the difference between dubstep and drum and bass. To be a great dj you need to live the music you play you need to understand what your fans want to hear and what you feel comfortable playing. For some artist they find it easier to play something original like their own sound or beat and unique sound that people can tell the difference from other artists. Here are some samples of unique sounds.

Treatment

I am working for is a Drum n Bass Male vocalist, Tempa T. Tempa T has worked  with a few  Drum n Bass artists such as Chase and Status, Daniel Hills and Ashburner. He is a Grime artist so he not Internationally famous this is one of the reasons i have chosen Hypest hype Tempa T Next hype. I have chosen to do a conradictive music video, because Tempa T is a more violent artist his lycris mainly have something to do with some sort of violence. The music video is going to have a range of visuals and many different graphics.  These visuals will emphasise the lyrics of the song to some extent , for example when he says “If guys step on my creps, Im bottling man I’m on a next hype”, I’ll see a man drinking alcohol walking past the artist and stepping on his shoe, and he grabs a bottle which is a ballon bottle and hits him over the head and the victim will act like he’s actually been bottles and the camera will then be his point of view so the it looks at Tempa T and then falls over. As he is letting go of the bottle he’ll turn around and be on a stage with a load of fans and sings the Chorus, i will also use images and visuals to represent the different sounds introduced to the song such as the bass and drums, Such as having people Jumping or dancing to the beat.

The target audience would be those who are interested in listening to Drum and Bass, young people who enjoy clubbing and partying atmosphere, the age group should therefore be from 16-25 year olds. As the artist of The song is a male and the music was created by a male, I can target the video towards either gender but mainly the male audience. To appeal to our target audience i’ll use visuals such as alcohol, women, clubbing and gig scenes and bright lights. This follows the young culture that people of 16-25years old have, as they drink, they love clubbing, parties and gigs.

As our video is contradictive, our mise-en-scene will vary but will follow our main concept of clubs, raves and gigs. It will include various images that go with the beat, such as the start where the music is building up we will have an image of people travelling to the gig.  This will be a point of view shot of the driver driving through city life at night, later on this will be speeded up as the song builds up to the lyrics. I’ll then have various images of people dancing in a club, and the club lifestyle, editing will include fast paced cuts, cutting to the beat which gives a dramatic effect.

I’ll be using various types of technology for our production. The camera I’ll be using is Panasonic GS 230, I’ll be using this camera because it allows us to adjust the exposure depending on the light conditions, as we are going to be filming mainly at night and there will be a lot of lights around, adjusting the exposure will allow us to achieve the best picture quality as possible. Editing will be one of the most important part of creating our music video, for this I’ll use an iMac, this is because I have experience in using final cut, you can use different effects, transitions and it is easy and effective. I will use many different aspects of technology to make our music video more interesting. I’ll film footage and rewind it to give the added effect that things are going back in time, also I’ll forward clips to give the impression that I’m going forward into time or time is moving quickly, such as a time lapse of watching the sun set over a city skyline. I’ll also use final cut pro to edit and add graphics and visuals to our music video, this is how I  intend to have different visuals.

My music video will be shot in many different locations such as London City, on rural areas and in a clubbing environment.  However I  may need to gain permission in order to film in such places.  I  also plan to film during the evening, so I get a real sense of nightlife.  As Im are planning on filming in the evening, I need to make sure that the lighting is just right so I can see everything that is happening in the shot.

Research report

Research report for Chase and Status Music Video.

The research I undertook for Chase and Status Music Video consisted of Looking at some of the video they have already and to check the genre of the song their featuring Tempa T. I looked at a lot of chase and status videos to see if they have and similar characteristics in most of them to see if they had anything special in their video so their audience could tell it was one of their videos, I did the same for Tempa T, since Tempa t is a Vocalist and he does a complete different genre of music I had had to figure a way to mix these two genres together. Which in this case Since tempa T is a Grime artist and Chase and Status are Drum and Bass/ Dubstep I thought of what people would like better and could relate to, which was a Club/ Gig Since both Artist goes on tours Tempa T is capable to get crowds hyped up and Chase and Status can keep the crowd hyped. I thought  Tempa T was more of a Violence artist and chase and Status was more about dancing and parting so I thought the video should be contradictive to Tempa T lyrics as in if the lyrics where too violence I would want people to see that in a video so I would either dub it out or just do what he says but make it funny. If I could of spoke to either of the artist I could of seen what they want in their video or got their opinion on the video, Since it is their video. Since they would know what their target audience would be I feel that this is the best form of research as I could see their videos whenever I wanted to get new ideas for the new video.

Conclusions from Primary research
From looking at many various videos from both artist I found that what they thought was what the crowd wanted I looked at a few gig videos and both crowd and artist enjoyed it. The audience is an important part of the music Chase and Status plays because if the audience didn’t like it they would have no one to listen to their songs and they would be able to go on tour and perform at gigs.  I found the for Tempa T it isn’t as audience orientated as Chase and Status  he music is about life and he like doing and about friends and parties and the thing both artist had in common was partying, So the best way to portray this was to what both artist had in common.

Conclusions from Secondary research
The secondary research consisted of watching tons of similar Music video and Gigs on youtube and their website for information about them. I looked at how Chase and status portray themselves and how Tempa T does as well. Chase and Status go for a more party vibe or just a chill and listen to music vibe, where as Tempa T is a more violent hyped artist where his music is about fighting, partying and being with friends. This led me on to seeing if could do the music video about anything else, but there wasn’t much I could of done it on and their wasn’t many video which featured grime artist in a dubstep/ drum and bass song. So in a way this won’t be a cliché of a music of this type of genre. if I could do it without having what both the artist have in common i would have Tempa T walking around looking for the club he was playing at and have him find the club before the song drops so soon as he grabs the mic the song  starts properly.
Length of the music video will be approximately  4minutes.

Research Conclusions
From  the conclusions there are certain things that I will be adding  into my music video.  I shall have Tempa T on stage and in the club and Gig so it targeting both type of audience, and whilst he's on stage MCing Chase and Status will be in the background Djing /Mixing . As for using clubs and gigs  for the introduction to show what everyone is getting ready for, I feel that the club and gig might not be enough cause i could use a party instead of the gig, I will have the opening scene the places Tempa T and Chase and Status are playing and then it will be in the TV the zooms out to show a guy watching to see the time and  location of the place, Then it will show people getting ready. i will Include VIP part of the club where Tempa T and Chase Status will be and will have other VIPs

Sorry It's not a JPEG it doesnt work on my laptop.

Music Video Analysis

The Video I am Analysing is KickStart By Example Renixed by Bar9. This song’s genre is Dubstep. There isn’t really any broad Characteristics of that genre, other than the big bass kicks and something happens when the bass goes there’s no real characteristics.

There is relation between lyrics and visuals. The Biggest relation between the lyrics and the visuals is when he says “ Deep down you’re my girl in the golden crown, my princess and I don’t wanna let you down.” He’s being held by two people and as the lyrics say don’t wanna let you down the bass kicks and as it does he breaks from their grip and shows he not going to let her down. The beginning of the song he goes to his girlfriends house he knocks on the door and she opens it and the lyrics say “ Look into to your eyes imagine life without ya,” He’s looking into her eyes “ The love kick starts again.” Two guys come walking to her house with stockings on their head rush throught the door and grabs the girl and throws her onto the bed.  The second time he sings the Love kick starts again The boyfriend is beating the other two guys. She then gets him to leave the house and as they are leaving two more guys came and the started running, they get away and he’s fuming and she runs the hold him but he pushes her off and then she holds his hand  “And the love kick Starts again” They Get away and they sleep on a park bench and as she asleep he goes to get her some food, He wakes her up and gives her the food. She starts to eat it “ Look into your eyes imagine life without ya,” Someone then Jumps off a wall into a fence chasing them “And the love kick Starts again” As he say “Kick” He kicked the guy who jumped off the wall. They Run to a construction site and 10 guys crawl out of the holes and bars and bricks. This bit of the song was quite contradictive the lyrics are “Forget I never had it so sweet” as he being held down by the Gang members, This is bit is contradicted as he has never had life so sweet but he’s being held down by a gang and his girlfriend is getting beaten up by the aswell.

Throughout the video as the bass or the drums kick and the scene in the video will cut to a different shot. He is being held down by the gang and the music kicks in and he shrugs them off him and the scene cuts as the bass kicks aswell. There isn’t much of a solo instrumental bit other than when he sings the chorus and there is 2 instruments playing one after the other. The video changes pace with the music massively, when the chorus is being song the tempo of the video and the music is calm and mellow as in the being of the song where he walking to her house and he is at her door the music is calm, but soon as the bass kick the music becomes hectic and fast paced two guys put stockings on their heads and the music becomes fast paced as they rush into the building and throw the girl onto the bed. There are symbols being played as well in the song and most out the time when the symbols are played someone is hit or something is being smashed, The scene where they are in her house and her boyfriend pushes one of the mugs of the table he smashes in to some plates and the symbols are used as a smashing noise for the plate. When they are trapped under a construction site the symbols are in time with the video, each punch and kick are in time with the symbols. The symbols creates empathises on each hit.

3x5 Directors.

1 Define in detail the style of the director from looking at your examples. What are the similarities/ differences.

2 Does the director tend to interpret the subject matter illustrate, amplify or contradict?

3 Do you think the star had a say in the ideas/ direction of the video or are there 2 stars

4 How does the director play god with the videos ( this maybe in the form of abuse, ridicule, playing with the time etc)

work/interviews

The Artiste I have chosen is High Contrast. Lincoln Barret aka High Contrast is a producer of drum and bass genre music. The list of song I am making will include some of his previous songs.
1. Fatality
2. Badass
3. Afro Samurai
4. Jungle
5. Caliber
6. Party People
7. It’s Love
8. Gold Digger
9. Dark Matter
10. Champion
The name of the album is The Return of the Jungle. I have named the album this because the majority of the songs are jungle and High Contrast makes all types of Drum and Bass so he is experimenting with Jungle.

For the CD  I will have a picture of High Contrast sitting in a room by himself relaxing listening to music with his current albums scattered along a table because this is a convention of the type of style he would choose. The front of the CD cover will be High Contrast working hard in his studio with slightly darker colours because the inside will be brighter colours with high contrast. The CD will include some High Contrast Stickers, Drum and Bass stickers and Jungle Stickers. The spine of the CD case will have examples of the stickers included with CD.
The back of the album will be the room same room as the front but he wont be there but everything will still be there and his albums will be in bright high contrast colours and there will be an outline of where High contrast was in high contrast. He has never done it before like this but on Tough Guys Don’t Dance he did a similar thing but then went back to an image of him in a empty room. So I am recreating all 3 of his ideas for album covers and putting them in one.

Interview 1: When you look at the album does it look like it is one of his albums.
: Yes Because there is a picute of him in a room by himself doing something.

2: Do you like my idea of using high contrast colours on the album?
: I think it is a good idea because his name is high contrast, and It will look good.

3: Do you like the idea of High Contrast doing an Old Skool Jungle Album
: Yes, because I think it will because not many artist experiment with other genres.

4: If you were making an album for High Contrast, what would you have done instead?
: I would of made this album a bit less arty and I would of just made a random album instead

5:What is your opinion on my ideas for the Album?
: I think it’s a great idea but I would change a few things, Overall good idea                                                                             Interview 1: When you look at the album does it look like it is one of his albums.
: Yes it does mainly because there is a picture of him in the center doing something.

2: Do you like my idea of using high contrast colours on the album?
: Yes, but no because is kind of a cliché but it hasn’t really been done so Yes!

3: Do you like the idea of High Contrast doing an Old Skool Jungle Album
: No, I prefer his remixes of songs and his cool vibe Drum and Bass.

4: If you were making an album for High Contrast, what would you have done instead?
: I would of probably made it a bit like Confidential but a bit more lively and less dull.

5:What is your opinion on my ideas for the Album?
: I like your idea for one reason that your using high contrast colours for a High Contrast                                                          album

Interview 1: When you look at the album does it look like it is one of his albums.
: Yes Because Lincoln is the first thing you notice and he’s in the center of the image.

2: Do you like my idea of using high contrast colours on the album?
: I think it is a good idea because he doesn’t have an album I know over with it.

3: Do you like the idea of High Contrast doing an Old Skool Jungle Album
: Yes, because I like jungle and it would be cool if he made jungle remixes as well and his     other stuff.

4: If you were making an album for High Contrast, what would you have done instead?
: I would of made this album the same way but just gave is a slightly better name.

5:What is your opinion on my ideas for the Album?
: As a whole idea I really like it and think it would fit in with the other albums.

Evaluation

Evaluation

I worked as well as I could with the instruction from my teachers, occasionally I would forget how to do something or didn’t hear how to do something and then I would have to ask one of the teachers so I would either write down on a word document or write it down on paper  and keep it in my bag. Independent work was hard on Photoshop because I was relatively new to it, Garage band was a bit better because I  have had recent experience with so I knew a thing or two about it so it was just recapping on some thing I knew or forgot, filming was alright because I have had experience with using a camera to record. So with Photoshop I didn’t’t know much about it so the independent work was all that great because I was limited to what I knew from previous uses, the work was to the best of my ability until I asked for a little help from teachers and students. Garage band was easier than  Photoshop because I have used it recently so I knew what I was doing so I didn’t’t have to ask for as much help from teachers or students. Filming was not the strongest but because I was in a group with experience with camera work and media I wasn’t to hard, they explained it to me what I didn’t’t know. For Photoshop my creativity was limited to what I could do on it so my creativity was to the best of my ability to get what was desired of me.
Deadlines were all met even if that meant for me to stay in study periods or lunch times. My creativity with garage band was better than Photoshop because it  I had a grasp of it so it was just needed to learn new things to improve on what I knew, so my ability to work was decent because I could get on with my work with our every 20 minutes asking for help or going on to you tube to check a tutorial, I missed the deadline because I forgot the sound clip so it was a day late. Filming my creativity was helpful to the group because I wasn’t capable to go through with my idea because of my lack of skills buy the group had the capable skills or knew how we could do it . My presentation skills are much better than what they were before I did my treatment because I had to do several presentations before so I was a bit more confident about it and more comfortable. Giving feedback wasn’t my strongest because I don’t know everyone in the group so I wont give feedback unless the ask so giving feedback wont be a strong aspect. I do get involved with some of the others work because I find it interesting  because I can learn new things from them  and take different idea for mine. My research skills are better than what they used to be I just used to Google it and just click on the first link and if it was relevant I would just take parts of  it.
My  ability  to share task are good but I never had a reason to share a task other that when we where filming  and the tasks where to act or do the camera, Supporting team members was simple because if someone couldn’t’t do something someone else would be able to help so we all helped out each other. Most the deadline where meet I tried to keep all the work ready before the deadline so I wouldn’t fall behind, I fell behind but I caught up because I left a week early.
I Could of looked at some tutorials on Photoshop  in my own time instead of  just doing during lesson times if I did I would have been able to work more independent and could have been able to help others,  I could of done the same for garage band cause there is always room for improving my skills on it so I could of done that as well.  Research  skills could also be improved so that I can do more research in depth.
Now after This I have improved on all the skills massively , because of the constant lessons on it and the consistence we use all of the skills. If I had the acquired for  this course from the beginning I would have been able to work independently or in a team of people. Working under direction would have been a load more easier because I would have had the skill the produce the work and been able to get it done and been able to add more to it and get a better mark.
